Old School Wismar

The Old School in Wismar is a building that unfortunately no longer exists, but nevertheless played an important role in the history of the town. It was a central part of the so-called "Gothic Quarter", which was centered around St. Mary's Church.

History and architecture:

• First mentioned in 1351: The Old School was first mentioned in a town register from 1351. It was described as an elongated building divided in the middle by a firewall. Both halves of the building were divided into three classrooms of equal size.
• Gothic architecture: The Old School was a typical example of Gothic architecture, which was widespread in Wismar. It was characterized by its slender proportions, pointed arches and large windows.
• Second World War: Unfortunately, the Old School, like many other buildings in Wismar, was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. Only a few fragments remain.

importance for the city:

• Education center: For centuries, the old school was the central educational center of Wismar. The town's children were taught here.
• The heart of the Gothic Quarter: Together with St. Mary's Church and other buildings, the Old School formed the heart of the Gothic quarter, which was known for its impressive architecture.
• Loss for the city: The destruction of the old school was a great loss for Wismar. A significant part of the historical building fabric and a symbol of education and culture was lost.

Today's situation:

• No remains: There are hardly any remains of the old school today.
• Reminder: Nevertheless, the old school in Wismar is not forgotten. There are various initiatives working to preserve the memory of this historic building.
• Future plans: There are plans to rebuild the ruins of the old school and turn it into a cultural center.

The old school is located directly opposite Das Kittchen. In our opinion, the foundation walls would have looked nicer with glazing, for example.
