The hospital church, the construction of which dates back to the mid-13th century, was originally a place of care. The sick and needy found refuge and medical care here.
Over the centuries, the church developed into a multifaceted center that, in addition to its function as a place of worship, also served as a clinic and hostel. Today, it houses valuable works of art from the destroyed churches of St. Marien and St. Georgen and is a popular destination for visitors who appreciate the history of the town and the beauty of medieval architecture. Particularly worth seeing are the artistically painted wooden beamed ceiling, the magnificently decorated pulpit and the elaborately designed stained glass windows.
It is well known to fans of the TV series "SOKO Wismar": the hospital church. Its imposing gate forms the entrance to the fictional police station.
