In the middle of the historic old town: the eventful history of the Wismar youth detention center

Where the Wismar youth detention center stands today, right in the heart of the historic old town, was once the site of a magnificent royal court.

Built around 1506 and 1553 from two houses in different architectural styles, it served the Dukes of Mecklenburg as a
city residence befitting its status.

With the transfer of Wismar to the Swedish crown in 1653, the princely court was transformed into a place of jurisdiction.

But the history of the building, in which today the JAA Wismar, took its own course.

It was built around 1890 as a poorhouse and then served as a prison from 1935.

Kellerstraße, where the building is located, had two house numbers at the time.

There is evidence that there was a poorhouse at number 2 in 1903.

Whether number 1 actually housed the later prison cannot be said with certainty at present.
In 1935, the building became the property of the German Reich.

After the Second World War, in 1958, it became public property and served as a remand center for the Fürstenhof district court.

Wismar, the 776-year-old Hanseatic city, can look back on an eventful past.

Its historic old town, with its magnificent churches such as the Holy Spirit Church, St. Mary's Church, St. George's Church and St. Nikolai's Church, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

The market square, with its historic buildings such as the Wasserkunst, the town hall, the Alte Schwede and the Reuterhaus, is the largest in the city.
Northern Germany.

On July 1, 1992, the Wismar youth detention center with 19 detention places was finally opened in Kellerstraße 1.
Today, the JAA Wismar stands as a testimony to the rich history of this Hanseatic city.

Embedded in the unique backdrop of the old town, it reminds us of the changing times that Wismar has experienced and at the same time reminds us of the importance of law and order in a free and democratic society.
