Wismar Town Hall

Wismar's town hall is an impressive building that reflects the history of the city. It is located on the market square and is a landmark of the Hanseatic city.

A bit of history:

• Medieval roots: Although today's town hall was built in the 19th century, Wismar already had a town hall in the Middle Ages. However, it was much simpler and stood in a different location.
• New building in the 19th century: Today's town hall was built between 1817 and 1819 according to the plans of the court architect Johann Georg Barca. It is a typical example of classicist architecture.
• Second World War: During the Second World War, the town hall was badly damaged by bombing, especially the east wing.
• Reconstruction and renovation: After the war, the town hall was rebuilt and extensively renovated in recent years. Today it shines in new splendor.

What makes the town hall special:

• Classicist architecture: The town hall is a typical example of classicist architecture with its symmetrical façade, columns and triangular gable.
• Town hall balcony: The town hall balcony is a popular meeting place and offers a beautiful view of the market square.
• Large ballroom: The large banqueting hall, which was reconstructed in the neoclassical style, is located in the eastern wing.
• City coat of arms: The large historic city coat of arms above the town hall balcony is an impressive symbol of the city.
• Administrative center: To this day, the town hall is the administrative center of the city of Wismar. This is where the town council meets and the administration is based.
