New things blossomed from the ruins of the war: the New Church, a work by the famous Bauhaus architect Otto Bartning, was built in record time and consecrated in 1951.
Built with great dedication by the parishioners, it provided a new home for the faithful of the destroyed churches of St. Mary's and St. George's. A particular highlight is the Passion retable, a relic of bygone times that is a reminder of Wismar's rich history. The baptismal font, once part of the Markbrunnen fountain, also tells of the church's close connection with the city."
