Armory

Wismar gained particular significance as a strategically important location in the 17th century under Swedish rule. The town was developed into one of the largest fortresses in Europe and served as a base for the Swedish Baltic fleet.

The armory was of central importance in this context, as it served as an arsenal and as quarters for soldiers.

Use after the Northern War:

After the end of the Great Northern War, Wismar lost its military significance. The arsenal initially stood empty as the Swedes razed most of their military installations in the town. Fortunately, the citizens of Wismar were able to purchase the building and save it from demolition. It initially served as a storehouse for grain and later for wool.

The engineering academy:

In the 1930s, the Zeughaus was repurposed as an engineering academy. The spacious rooms offered ideal conditions for teaching and practical training for students.

The renovation and current use:

The extensive renovation of the Zeughaus in the 1990s was a major challenge. The architects had to preserve the historical substance of the building and at the same time meet modern requirements for a library. Today, the Zeughaus houses the Wismar City Library and is a popular meeting place for citizens and visitors.

Other interesting facts:

• The hanging work: The cantilevered ceiling in the large hall is a masterpiece of architecture. It was erected without supporting pillars and allowed for optimal use of the space.
• The portals: The artistically designed portals are a characteristic feature of the building. They bear witness to the importance of the Zeughaus as a prestigious building.
• The coat of arms: The Swedish royal coat of arms above the entrance is a reminder of the time when the building served as an arsenal.
• The city library: The library offers a wide range of books, magazines and digital media. It regularly organizes events such as readings, exhibitions and workshops.

The Zeughaus can be reached from Hotel Das Kittchen in about 5 minutes in the direction of the harbor.
