The water gate in Wismar, an impressive testimony to the Hanseatic city, is the last of the five city gates that have been preserved.
Built around 1450 in the brick Gothic style, it marked the most important entrance to the harbor and the city.
The pointed arched passageway and the square tower with a gabled roof characterize the gate's appearance. The two gables, decorated with blind arches and coats of arms, bear witness to the importance of the Wassertor as a prestigious building.
On the town side, the stepped gable with its battlements stands out, while the harbour side is characterized by a triangular gable. The coats of arms above the archways, the split city coat of arms and the old city coat of arms, tell the story of the city and its connections.
As part of the medieval town fortifications, the water gate played a decisive role in the security and prosperity of Wismar.
Today it is a popular destination for visitors and a symbol of the Hanseatic city's rich history.
