The Wismar market, a centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage city, is not just a square, but a living history book. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the pulsating center of trade and social life in the Hanseatic city.
The surrounding streets, named after the residents of the time and their professions, tell of the town's rich past.
The town hall, the Wasserkunst and the patrician house "Alter Schwede" form an impressive ensemble that reflects the architectural diversity and wealth of the Hanseatic era. The Wasserkunst, a technical masterpiece of its time, dominates the square and is a reminder of the importance of water for the city.
The marketplace was not only a place of trade, but also a center of social life. Festivals were celebrated here, markets were held and important decisions were made. The surrounding buildings, such as the town hall and the patrician houses, bear witness to the importance of the square for the city's development.
To this day, the market is a lively place that is regularly used as a weekly market. Visitors can enjoy the historic atmosphere here and immerse themselves in the history of the Hanseatic city of Wismar.
A memorial plaque on the square commemorates the execution of Mayor Johann Bantzkow and Councillor Hinrik van Haren, who were sentenced to death following artisan riots.
By the way! Here you will also find the Water artthe town hall, various restaurants, banks and much more.
The market square is approx. 2-3 minutes' walk from our hotel Das Kittchen.
A short story from the legends of Wismar:
There is said to have been a secret tunnel in the dark corridors beneath Wismar that led from the Franciscan monastery to St. Jacob's.
Nobody knew for sure, but legend had it that way. When a drummer was sentenced to death during Swedish rule, he was offered a dangerous deal: He was to explore the corridor while drumming incessantly.
If he returned alive, his life would be spared. His heart pounding, he descended into the depths.
The drumbeats echoed through the underground corridors and seemed to follow the city.
But they suddenly fell silent at the market square.
The drummer was never seen again. To this day, it is said that on dark nights you can still hear the muffled echo of his drum reverberating through the alleyways, telling of a secret hidden deep underground.
